Doctors: Obesity is not a Disease

A group of 56 doctors has developed a more nuanced diagnostic approach for obesity, termed "clinical obesity." This method addresses the limitations of the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI), which can misclassify muscular individuals as obese and does not account for fat distribution. The commission emphasizes that visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs and is associated with an "apple-shaped" body, is significantly more harmful than subcutaneous fat, found under the skin in a "pear-shaped" body.

To diagnose clinical obesity, the commission recommends combining BMI with additional measures like waist circumference or direct body fat scans, along with evidence of organ dysfunction or impaired daily activities.

Symptoms such as breathlessness, heart failure, joint pain, and organ dysfunction are key indicators. Those without these symptoms are classified as having "preclinical obesity," indicating a higher risk but not immediate need for drug treatment.

The commission's approach has gained support from major health organizations worldwide, such as merican Heart Association, the Chinese Diabetes Society. However, its integration into medical practice and public perception remains to be seen. Preliminary estimates suggest that 20-40% of the global obese population may qualify as clinically obese under this new definition, necessitating treatment.

Reducing calorie intake and limiting saturated fats are effective strategies for decreasing visceral fat, as they help lower overall body fat and improve metabolic health:

1)A diet rich in whole foods;

2)lean proteins;

3) healthy fats,;

4)combined with regular physical activity.

They can specifically target visceral fat accumulation. Additionally, certain natural supplements, such as camu camu powder from Peru, have gained attention for their potential health benefits.

Superfood that reduces Visceral Fat

Camu camu, a fruit high in vitamin C and antioxidants, has been studied for its ability to reduce fat saturation and improve metabolic function. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may support weight management and contribute to reducing harmful visceral fat over time.
